สหรัฐเผย การโจมตีทางอากาศเพียงอย่างเดียวไม่สามารถสกัดกลุ่มไอเอสที่ต้องการยึดเมือง โคบานีของซีเรียได้ และยอมรับว่าเมืองอาจตกเป็นของกลุ่มหัวรุนแรงในไม่ช้า

สำนักข่าวต่างประเทศรายงานจากกรุงวอชิงตัน ประเทศสหรัฐอเมริกา เมื่อวันที่ 8 ต.ค.ว่าพล.ร.ต.จอห์น เคอร์บีย์ โฆษกกระทรวงกลาโหมสหรัฐ ( เพนตากอน ) แถลงว่าหน่วยงานด้านความมั่นคงของวอชิงตันทุกแห่งติดตามสถานการณ์ในเมืองโค บานี ทางตอนเหนือของซีเรียอย่างใกล้ชิด และกำลังทำทุกวิถีทางเพื่อหยุดยั้งความพยายามของกลุ่มรัฐอิสลาม ( ไอเอส ) ซึ่งต้องการยึดครองเมืองแห่งนี้
อย่างไรก็ตาม ปฏิบัติการโจมตีทางอากาศของสหรัฐในเมืองโคบานีเกิดขึ้นในวงจำกัด แน่นอนว่าไม่สามารถสกัดกั้นกลุ่มไอเอสได้อย่างถาวร การใช้กำลังทหารราบที่มีประสิทธิภาพจึงดูเป็นแผนการดีที่สุดในเวลานี้ แต่วอชิงตันยังไม่มีนโยบายในเรื่องดังกล่าว

กลุ่มไอเอสพยายามยึดครองเมืองโคาบานีมาตั้งแต่กลาง เดือนก.ย. เนื่องจากเป็นเมืองสำคัญทางยุทธศาสตร์ที่หากยึดครองได้จะสามารถขยายอิทธิพล ได้ตลอดแนวชายแดนทางเหนือของซีเรียที่ติดกับภาคใต้ของตุรกี แต่ถูกต้านทานอย่างหนักโดยกองกำลังป้องกันตนเองของชาวเคิร์ดในพื้นที่ ทั้งนี้ การสู้รบทำให้มีผูเเสียชีวิตแล้วกว่า 400 ศพ โดยราว 219 ศพเป็นนักรบไอเอส และ163 ศพเป็นนักรบชาวเคิร์ด อีกทั้งยังส่งผลให้พลเรือนกว่า 160,000 คนต้องลี้ภัยข้ามแดนไปยังตุรกี
