LOOK CLOSELY: Portrait of an American Bison In viewing this photo, many people see what they describe as an ‘explosion in water’, or something of artistic expression rather than a Bison. A truly remarkable capture of a truly remarkable animal! Tag someone who should see this! Follow @ourplanetdaily for more! Photo via © @afsalliance
Sleeping Koala “At the @portmacquariekoalahospital quite a few koalas are admitted with a bacterial disease called Chlamydia. There are 2 strains of Chlamydia that can infect koalas (with many different strains as well) and these are not the same ones that affect humans. In koalas both species can cause either ocular or urogenital Chlamydia and both can be found in the one animal at the same time. The ocular form which we call conjunctivitis can result in blindness. But it is also the form that we can often treat successfully. Elparra David was first admitted to the hospital in 2013 with signs of conjunctivitis in both eyes. We treated him for 6 weeks and 2 weeks after that he screened negative for the disease and was released again. We give all the koalas that are admitted to the hospital an ear tag and microchip before they are released again. The reason why we do this is, because some of our koalas are admitted more than once and we call these koalas “repeat-offenders”. Because of the identification that we give them, we can check their history and know what has occurred previously. David has been admitted to the hospital 6 times (!!) for a number of different reasons and the last time was in October of 2015. He’s an old male now (but still very handsome!) and unfortunately he’s almost blind due to both conjunctivitis and he has developed cataracts as well (from some sort of physical trauma). He has got his own yard here at the hospital and is enjoying the 5-start treatment. His favourite spot where he likes to sleep is on top of the log and he seems quite comfortable. Except for his very large behind that tends to stick out which doesn’t seem to bother him but we think is pretty funny His future is unsure at the moment but we do hope he can stay with us for as long as possible.” Follow @ourplanetdaily for more!⠀ Tag someone that should see this! and Caption by @portmacquariekoalahospital
