A translucent blue tang. This is an Acanthurus coeruleus, or a blue tang surgeonfish. They're found from New York to Brazil. This one in particular was discovered just off of Puerto Vallarta, a resort town on Mexico’s Pacific coast. The blue tang surgeonfish can grow up to 15 inches long, but the adults aren't see-through. It's their young that are small and transparent. Having clear bodies helps conceal the babies from predators. Sea turtles have a close relationship with these little guys: The blue tang surgeonfish nibbles algae and parasites off the turtle’s flippers, getting the nourishment it needs while simultaneously keeping its flippered friend clean and healthy.
